School Program Draws Line Between Science And Sports
(CBS) – Kids playing soccer in the summer is not so unusual. But what some grade-schoolers are doing the rest of the day is surprising.
CBS 2's Vince Gerasole reports.
The goal is to help kids get a kick out of science.
They're logging time in the physics lab, learning the basics of acceleration speed and velocity.
Then they head outside to have a ball.
"We talk about when you apply force, if you apply more force it accelerates more. Then we'll calculate speed," teacher Erin Horan says.
The idea here is to get 9- and 10-year-olds interested in science at an earlier age.
"It makes me feel good that I am able to explain what they were talking about," nine-year-old Mia Selene-Rodriguez says.
Research shows that interest in science may fall off in the upper elementary grades. This program, taking place at Benito Juarez High School, is sponsored by Project Infinite Green, which focuses on bolstering STEM skills for all students.
