Firefighters Rescue Woman From Icy Des Plaines River, Along With Police Officers Who Tried To Help her

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four Schiller Park police officers ended up in the ice-covered Des Plaines River on Sunday evening, when they tried to help a woman in distress. Firefighters later pulled all of them to safety.

Around 6:16 p.m., police and fire crews responded to a person in the Des Plaines River. Officials said police officers arrived first, and heard a woman in distress.

Four officers who went out to try to rescue the woman fell through the ice and ended up in the water.

A short time later, firefighters arrived and donned water rescue suits, and pulled out all four officers and the woman.

All five people who fell into the water were taken to hospitals for evaluation.
