Red Line trains bypassing Thorndale after man falls and dies on tracks

CTA Red Line trains were bypassing the Thorndale station on Monday afternoon, after police said a man fell onto the tracks and died.

Police said, around 1:40 p.m., a 58-year-old man fell onto the tracks at the Thorndale station in the 1100 block of West Thorndale Avenue, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Sources said the incident appeared to be a suicide.

Service on the Red Line and Purple Line was disrupted after the man's death. While normal Purple Line Service has since resumed,  northbound Red Line trains were bypassing the Thorndale station as of 3:30 p.m. Riders should use the southbound platforms on track 2 to access trains to stations between Thorndale and Howard.

Shuttle buses were available between Granville and Bryn Maw in both directions.

Red Line and Purple Line riders also should consider alternate routes, such as the #36 Broadway, #151 Sheridan, #84 Peterson, or #92 Foster buses.

This is a developing story.
