Pride In Park Ridge For Hillary Clinton, But Sanders' Supporters Stand By Their Man

PARK RIDGE (CBS) -- In Hillary Clinton's hometown, many residents are excited she made history on Tuesday, becoming the first woman to win a major party nomination for president.

"It's exciting for us as parents of three daughters," said Catherine Hankins.

Debbe Sarsany, a mother, whose young son attends Hillary Clinton's old grade school, said, "Everybody feels honored to have had Hillary live here in Park Ridge,"

However, has CBS 2's Jim Williams reports, Bernie Sanders' supporters in Chicago are not ready to end their campaign.

Now that Clinton has secured the Democratic nomination, they're feeling proud at Tim Griffin's Park Ridge restaurant, where Clinton held a fund-raiser a few weeks ago.

"Now I get to go home and tell my kids the world is yours from going to Maine South in Park Ridge," said Tim Griffin.

Expressions of pride are one thing, gloating is something else.

CBS 2 has learned the Clinton campaign is being very careful in how it tries to win over the Bernie Sanders supporters.

Sources say on Tuesday night Clinton staffers and fund raisers in the Chicago area decided to wait for a couple of weeks before calling Sanders' supporters, to let hurt feelings heal.

Rebecca Abraham, a Sanders' delegate, said she is passionate about Sanders' platform and couldn't switch her support to Clinton.

"Not at this time, no," she said. "I've always loved Bernie Sanders. His discussions about income inequality is important."

So she vows to wait to see what Sanders decides to do now.

"We are not sore losers," she said. "Senator Sanders is still in the race. My full support is with Senator Sanders."

If Sanders wants a debate on the floor of the Democratic convention, Abraham, who will be there in Philadelphia, told us she'll support that.

But Abraham says if Sanders ends up asking his delegates to support Clinton she will "gladly do so."
