Black Ice Believed To Be Responsible For Two Fatal Crashes Sunday Morning

(CBS) -- The weather made morning travel particularly treacherous on roadways all over the area.

Black ice is believed responsible for at least two accidents and three deaths.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports sunshine sometimes gives drivers a false sense of security and often masks sheets of ice that still cover the roads in these abominable temperatures.

Tragically, state troopers believe that hidden black ice may have contributed to these crashes.

State Police say around 8 this morning, the driver of a silver Corolla somehow lost control of the car on I-90 near Barrington Road, hit a light pole and landed on the other side of the tollway.

"Companies assisted with patient removal and extrication and assisted with transport of subjects to the hospital," said Patrick Fortunato of the Hoffman Estates Fire Department.

Two people inside the car died and a third was taken to the hospital.

"One of the biggest concerns that we have when we are dealing with the tollway is the high speed traffic, icy conditions. The roads are icy even though it is not snowing right now," said

Those conditions may have contributed to a second accident at that I-90 scene, after a car careened into squad cars that had shut down the road - resulting in more people being taken to the hospital.

Just two hours later a pick-up somehow left the road and ended up flipped over near a tree at route 173 and eagle ridge in Antioch. Police say a man died at the scene. Two others were injured.

Police have not released the names or ages of those who died in the crashes Sunday. State Police say there were also lots of driving issues on I-55 Sunday morning due to the ice.

Calls to the Illinois Department of Transportation to ask them about efforts to keep roads safe - were not returned.
