Police Arrest Man In Connection With Joliet White Castle Robbery

JOLIET, Ill. (STMW) -- Police say the masked man who held up a White Castle at gunpoint Wednesday let employees get a good look at his face minutes earlier, the Herald News is reporting.

Kenneth J. Gutschick, 23, also called to report his silver Toyota stolen Thursday after police had matched it to the getaway car and towed it away, Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

About 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, Gutschick went into White Castle, 2231 Route 59, but told the clerk at the register he'd left his wallet in the car and walked out, Roechner said. Ten minutes later, he returned wearing the same brown suede coat with fur on the cuffs, but had covered the lower part of his face and was now holding a black handgun, Roechner said.

The robber pointed the gun at the clerk and told him to quickly empty the register. After taking $285, the bandit ran out to get into the passenger seat of a Toyota being driven by a woman, Roechner said.

"The victim got the license plate, which was matched to Gutschick at 5316 Maple Glen Drive," Roechner said.

While the house was kept under surveillance, an officer found the Toyota parked a block away in the 5300 block of Whispering Oaks Avenue at 3:45 a.m. Thursday, Roechner said.

"The vehicle was towed to the station garage to await a search warrant," he said.

At 2:30 p.m. Gutschick called to report the vehicle stolen and met with detectives at his house, Roechner said.

"They asked who he had been with on the night the car had been taken and also spoke with the woman he identified," Roechner said.

After she was questioned, Gutschick was arrested on a charge of armed robbery. Detectives also believe Gutschick went inside a nearby grocery store shortly before robbing the restaurant, but decided not to rob it after seeing an armed security guard, Roechner said.
