3 Killed, 36 Wounded In New Year's Weekend Shootings
(STMW) -- Three people were killed and at least 36 others have been wounded in shootings across the city over the New Year's holiday weekend.
The first reported homicide of 2016 happened about 2:20 a.m. New Year's Day in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood on the South Side.
Deandre Holiday, 24, got into a fight with someone in the 4600 block of South St. Lawrence when the person pulled out a gun and fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. The shooter then fled the scene.
Holiday, of the 5100 block of South Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
A 38-year-old man injured in the same shooting later showed up at Provident Hospital with a hand wound, police said. He was listed in good condition.
The most recent fatal shooting happened late Friday in Englewood.
About 9:40 p.m., 32-year-old Roderick Snowden was sitting in a vehicle parked in the 6100 block of South Sangamon when a dark-colored car pulled alongside him and someone inside opened fire, authorities said.
Snowden, who lived in the 1200 block of Wadsworth Avenue in North Chicago, was shot repeatedly and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died.
The other homicide happened Friday morning in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
A 36-year-old man was shot in the chest in the 1900 block of West Garfield at 6:40 a.m., police said.
He was driven to 55th Street and Artesian before he was taken to Stroger, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have withheld his name pending notification of his family.
The latest stretch of gunfire left 10 people wounded — four of them critically — in less than three hours early Sunday.
About 4:45 a.m., a 21-year-old man was sitting in a car parked in the 3500 block of West Huron in the East Garfield Park neighborhood when two gunmen walked up and started shooting, hitting him in the shoulder and face, police said. Friends drove him to Norwegian American Hospital and he later was transferred in critical condition to Stroger.
At 4:20 a.m., a documented gang member was in the 600 block of South St. Louis in the Homan Square neighborhood when he was shot in the upper right arm, police said. The 35-year-old man was taken to Stroger in serious condition.
A bullet grazed a man's head in a North Lawndale neighborhood shooting while he was walking outside about 3:15 a.m. in the 1400 block of South Christiana, police said. He took himself to Stroger and was expected to be released later Sunday morning.
Fifteen minutes earlier, a 44-year-old was walking in the 3800 block of South Albany in Brighton Park when someone in a light-colored SUV shot him in the thigh. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital after the 3 a.m. shooting, and his condition was stabilized, police said.
About the same time, two men were seriously injured in a West Garfield Park neighborhood shooting. A 33-year-old man was sitting in the driver's side of a parked vehicle in the 4400 block of West Madison when he heard shots and felt pain. He suffered a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and a graze wound to the head and drove to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was listed in serious condition.
A 29-year-old man who was standing on the sidewalk at the time was shot in the right wrist and thigh, police said. He was taken to Loretto Hospital and later transferred to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. The men weren't together at the scene and it wasn't clear if either was an intended target.
At 2:45 a.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks while riding in a car in Englewood's 0-100 block of West Garfield Boulevard. He showed up at St. Bernard Hospital and his condition was stabilized before being transferred to Stroger, police said.
About 2:15 a.m., three men were critically wounded in a shooting near the Gold Coast W Chicago-Lakeshore hotel in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive. A 25-year-old standing outside was shot repeatedly by someone who got out of a dark-colored SUV before it took off westbound on Ontario, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
A 32-year-old shot in the head and a 30-year-old shot in the left side of the abdomen later showed up at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. They were both listed as critical. Police said it was unclear if two older men were shot inside or outside the hotel as the victims — all documented gang members — were not cooperating with investigators.
At least 25 other people have been wounded in separate shootings since 3 p.m. Thursday.
