Pilot Survives Crash Landing In Wheeling
WHEELING, Ill. (CBS) -- A twin-engine Beechcraft crashed just north of Chicago Executive Airport, in Wheeling, Tuesday evening.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported injuries to the pilot, although Wheeling Police indicated they had no reports of serious injuries.
FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro said that the Beechcraft Super King Air 200 was preparing to land at the airport, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, at about 8:30 p.m. when it crashed near the intersection of Wolf and Hintz Roads, narrowly missing the Foxboro Apartments.
FAA records indicated that the twin-engine turbo-prop plane, built in 1981, is registered to TennAir LLC, of Clarksville, Tenn.
Wolf Road was closed between Hintz and Dundee Roads to allow emergency crews and investigators to work.
Planes crashed at or near the airport, once known as Palwaukee Airport, in 2010, 2006, 2005 and 2004. The crash closest to the spot of the Tuesday accident occurred Oct. 30, 1996. Published reports indicated that a twin engine Gulfstream IV business jet with three crew members and one passenger lost control upon takeoff and crashed immediately to the north of the airport, killing all on board and raining flaming debris on the Foxboro Apartments parking lot.
The cause of the latest accident is under investigation.
