The city of Naperville and its police union just recently reached a contract agreement. One that called for wage increases.
So police union spokeswoman Tamara Cummings says these layoff notices to six officers were unexpected.
"It was out of the blue when we heard it. We were at the table for 18 months and we never once heard any mention of an inability to pay a reasonable wage increase. There's no mention of layoffs being envisioned."
And Cummings says the police union plans to file an unfair labor practice complaint with the state labor relations board.
The city of Naperville says safety will not be comprised - and released a statement which says: "While the layoffs are unfortunate, it should not be a surprise to anyone... We have emphasized our financial condition at the bargaining tables and we have asked all unions to join our efforts to balance the budget."
