McHenry County Deputy Dies After Being Shot Last Fall

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A McHenry County sheriff's deputy died Monday, after he was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance last fall.

Dwight Maness, 47, was one of two deputies shot by Scott Peters, who fired more than a dozen rounds from a semi-automatic rifle at sheriff's deputies in October 2014.

Maness, who had been making progress during his recovery, died unexpectedly.

In a statement Sheriff Bill Prim said: "I had a conversation with him about a week ago, and he was enthusiastic about regaining his strength and returning to patrol. The news is devastating."

Peters fled after the shooting and eluded police for 16 hours.

Peters, of Holiday Hills, was convicted this summer on more than a dozen charges, including seven counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

He was sentenced to 135 years in prison.

Maness was shot in the abdomen and leg and had been using a wheelchair.

The second deputy, Khalia Satkiewicz, was shot in the right leg in the exchange.

During his trial, Peters' defense attorneys said Peters thought he was firing at someone trying to break into his home.

The Northwest Herald reports that Maness, of McHenry, and his wife, Sue, recently attended vigil for Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz, a Fox Lake police officer shot Sept. 1 in the line of duty.
