Man Charged With Impersonating Cop In Lincoln Park Home Invasion

(STMW) -- A southwest suburban man has been charged with passing himself off as a police officer to break in and attack a man in his Lincoln Park home early Saturday.

Officers responded to a disturbance at the home about 2 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Mildred, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

Investigators found that Joseph Benson, 23, had purported to be a police officer to force his way in and a attack a 41-year-old man inside, police said.

Benson, of the 0-100 block of Cherrywood Court in Indian Head Park, faces felony charges of home invasion and false impersonation of an officer, police said.

He appeared in court on Saturday, where a judge ordered him held on a $150,000 bond, according to the Cook County sheriff's office. He is next due in court Mar. 13.
