Man Charged In Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A West Side man has been charged for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident that killed a 75-year-old man last month in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Vance E. Baines, 38, of the 5400 block of West Washington Boulevard, was charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death, police announced Wednesday.

He had previously been ticketed for failure to reduce speed, driving without insurance and failure to give information following the April 1 crash in the 3400 block of West North Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Baines is accused of driving a vehicle that fatally struck 75-year-old Robert E. Deters about 8:10 p.m. April 1, authorities said.

Deters was crossing the intersection with a car struck him and fled the scene, Alfaro said. Police found Baines and the car in the 4700 block of West Washington Boulevard.

An autopsy determined Deters, of an unidentified home address, died of multiple injuries from being struck by a vehicle, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The death was ruled an accident.

Baines is expected to appear in bond court Thursday.
