Snow Eases, But Icy Conditions Persist
Updated 8:05 p.m. 3/5/11
CHICAGO (STMW) - Snowy conditions have given way to overcast skies Saturday evening, but motorists and emergency responders are still dealing with slick roadways and weather-related crashes.
Temperatures hovered around 30 degrees at 8 p.m., with winds blowing around 15 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather has already caused multiple crashes on area expressways. An off-ramp and a portion of Inner Lake Shore Drive were closed shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday evening, but were re-opened around 7:30, said News Affairs Officer Anne Dwyer.
The city's Dept. of Streets & Sanitation deployed "a small amount" of trucks about 3 p.m. to patrol and treat slick spots on the main streets and Lake Shore Drive, according to a statement from spokesman Matt Smith. By 7 p.m., 174 trucks were patrolling the roads.
The drivers are paying special attention to bridges decks, overpasses and elevated portions of roadway.
A flood advisory remains in effect for the East Branch of the DuPage River in Bolingbrook, the Des Plaines River in Lincolnshire and Riverdale and the Fox River in Montgomery, the weather service said. About 3/4-inch of rain fell in the last 24 hours.
