A dozen families were displaced by a large fire at a three-story residential building in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates, Illinois, on Tuesday morning.

The Hoffman Estates Fire Department said the fire broke out on the second floor of the building just after 6 a.m.

Video from the scene showed heavy smoke coming from what appears to be a third-story unit of the building on Atlantic Avenue. Firefighters used ladders to douse the flames as smoke billowed from the top floor.

Fire officials said four people were treated at a local hospital and are expected to recover.

The fire displaced 12 families, and the Red Cross is working to help the residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
