High School Athlete Fatally Shot In Attempted Carjacking

(CBS) – A Chicago high school student who had dreams of playing college football was fatally shot this week during an attempted carjacking.

CBS 2's Charlie De Mar talks with the teen's mother as the search for the killer continues.

"I just happened to be washing the dishes and then all of the sudden you hear gun shots," Felicia Parker says.

She went outside her Austin apartment and saw her son, Jeremiah, lying in front of a car.

"His eyes were still open he was trying to hold on," she says.

The 17-year-old was fatally shot Monday in the 500 block of South Lockwood after police say someone tried carjacking the teen. There was a struggle for the keys.

"It's got to be a very bitter individual, because anyone with a heart wouldn't have done that," Felicia Parker says.

Her son could move fast with the football. He was a standout running back at Roosevelt High School with big dreams of playing college ball.

"We just looked forward to him having a great future, fulfilling his dreams," the mother says.

His friends plan to place a signed football in his casket so that he'll always remain near the sport and people he loved.

"He loved football, and I got everyone to sign it show out love and appreciation," friend Devontrell Turnipseed says.

Parker's football coaches are also grieving the loss, saying Parker was a good kid who didn't get in trouble.
