Questions Remain For Family Of Lt. Gliniewicz

(CBS) -- After Wednesday's revelations that Fox Lake Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz committed suicide and was being investigating for criminal activity, at this point there are more questions than answers about what his family knew.

The family released a statement from the law offices of Kelleher & Buckley that said, "Today has been another day of deep sorrow for the Gliniewicz family. The family has cooperated with the Task Force's investigation and will not comment at this time. The Gliniewicz family requests that their privacy be respected as they continue to cope with the loss of the beloved husband and father."

Multiple sources tell CBS 2 that Gliniewicz's wife Melodie and son DJ are being questioned by investigators.

Gliniewicz, 52, was found on the morning of Sept. 1. He had radioed in a short time before that he was in pursuit of three men. The shooting led to a massive manhunt for the suspects and a drawn out probe into the death.

On Wednesday, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force announced that his death has been ruled a suicide and that he was being investigated for "thousands of dollars" from the Fox Lake Police Explorer training program.

Police won't say what exactly Mrs. Gliniewicz knew, but that she was questioned about stressors in her husband's life that could've led him to suicide.

Meanwhile, CBS 2's Marissa Bailey reports there was no movement at the Gliniewicz home today, just a "no trespassing" sign and the occasional Lake County sheriff deputy driving by.

Still, the Gliniewicz's neighbor says he had no idea he was living next door to a calculated criminal.

"It's been tough, lots of speculation around here," he said. "Didn't really expect to see what I'm watching on the news right now."

The police charity 100 Club says it will ask the family to give back a charitable donation of $15,000.
