France Calls Nice Attack Terrorism, 84 Now Dead, Including Two Americans

(CBS) -- Two Americans were among the more than 80 people killed in a Bastille Day attack in southern France, as that nation tried to cope with another act of terrorism on its soil.

The country declared three days of national mourning. France's president said the 84 deaths, after a truck driver plowed through a crowd of revelers who were watching fireworks along the main promenade in Nice, was an act of terror.

The two Americans are a father and son from Texas, Sean and Brody Copeland.

Authorities identified the driver as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, but no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Around 10:30 p.m., the driver fired into the crowd and then barreled down the street for more than a mile before his was killed by police. The truck was loaded with guns and grenades.

Children were among the dead, police said.

"The worst thing was watching couples and parents running with their children, their terror, their fear," said witness Paul Delane.

Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump reacted to the attacks.

Clinton called for improved intelligence gathering to fight terror, while Trump said he would ask for a declaration of war against the terror group ISIS.

French President Francois Hollande will now request a three-month extension of the state of emergency declared after the November terrorist attacks in Paris.

France was already reeling from terrorist attacks, including attacks in and around Paris in January and November last year.
