Food Stamp Processing Times Could Cost Illinois $18 Million In Federal Funding

Chicago (CBS) -- The state of Illinois could lose more than $18 million in federal funding if food stamp applications aren't processed quicker.

The Illinois Department of Human Services reportedly has until April 21 to make significant improvements.

The agency must improve timeliness processing or show an effective plan to catch up.

Nearly 2 million Illinois residents use the program to help with groceries. The majority of them are people with disabilities, children and the elderly.
