Kenwood apartment building fire started by roofing materials, Chicago fire officials say

A fire broke out at an apartment building in Chicago's Kenwood neighborhood on Wednesday. 

Video from social media shows heavy smoke and flames billowing from a building at 4808 South Drexel Boulevard. 

The Chicago Fire Department said roofing materials caught fire, and the blaze was spurred on by the dry and windy conditions. CFD said they were able to strike the fire out within 20 minutes. 

A contractor at the site said crews were making repairs to the building when the fire started.

"We were fixing it up," said Jesus Valles. "We were painting in the basement, and that's when the fire started upstairs."

No injuries were reported, CFD said.
