Emanuel Asks Police Officials To Review Training For Mental Health Calls In Wake Of Police Shooting

(CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel is asking the interim Chicago Police superintendent and the chief of the Independent Police Review Authority to review police training in wake of Saturday's fatal police shooting.

According to a statement from the Mayor's office, Emanuel says he has asked them to review crisis intervention team training and provide guidelines on how police officers handle calls involving mental health.

On Saturday, a 19-year-old man and 55-year-old woman were fatally shot by Chicago Police in response to a domestic disturbance. Police say that the man, Quintonio LeGrier was combative when they arrived. Neighbors said he had a baseball bat. Family say that Bettie Jones was shot as she opened her door and police admitted that her shooting was an accident.

"I have asked that they determine the deficiencies in the current training, and determine what steps can be taken immediately to address them," Emanuel said in a statement.

Earlier on Sunday, family and friends of LeGrier and Jones called for an end to police shootings.
