Police 31 Charged After Barricade Situation In Edgewater

UPDATED: 6:25 p.m. 5/10/15

(CBS) -- Thirty one people were charged after an hours-long standoff in the Edgewater neighborhood Friday night.

Police were making a traffic stop in the 6300 block of North Lakewood when people began yelling and screaming at them and shots were heard at the same time, police said.

The shots were fired from the back of the residence and it is not clear if someone was being shot at and no one was hurt, police said. Initially, police said the shots were fired at the officers.

Police arrested 33 people and charged 31 of them with disorderly conduct.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports by one neighbor's account the standoff lasted about five hours.

After hearing the gunshots, law enforcement took about a half-dozen of neighbors to safety from a two flat apartment near Lakewood and Rosemont Avenue.

The standoff ended around 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

A man who was visiting an apartment there says some people inside threw a party. He believes two men tried to get in and an argument followed.

Mark Johnson says he heard the shots and hit the floor.

"At that point we didn't know what was going on," Johnson said. "We heard the shots and everyone was just running for cover."
