Dye to the bay?

by Adam Harris

The calls for Jermaine Dye to play on the south side may be quiet for good soon.  Dye is holding out this off-season for a full time gig where he would play the field everyday, and his dream could finally come true.

Chicago Tribune baseball reporter Phil Rogers offered up a theory today that the San Francisco Giants might take a chance on Dye due to former Cub Mark DeRosa's injury, This makes a lot of sense.

In the offseason, the Giants decided not to sign Dye because of his age and his lack of range in the outfield, but the Giants have had a ton of trouble scoring runs so far this year. They have scored 144 runs which ranks 14th in the National League, and 21st in all the majors.

The Giants arguably have the best 1,2,3 starting punch in the majors with Tim Lincecum (4-0, 1.86 ERA), Barry Zito (5-1, 1.90 ERA), and Matt Cain (2-2, 3.38 ERA). Their bullpen has been just as good with 10 saves, 11 holds, and a combined ERA of 3.28.

All that seems to be missing is the ability to score runs consistently, and free agent Jermaine Dye may be that bat they need. Both parties would benefit.
