Crash-and-grab burglars hit Shell station on Lincoln Park-Lakeview cusp in Chicago

Crash-and-grab burglars hit a Shell gas station on the cusp of Chicago's Lakeview and Lincoln Park communities early Monday morning.

The crash-and-grab happened at the Shell station at 2801 N. Ashland Ave., at the northwest corner of the intersection with Diversey Parkway. Police said at 4:40 a.m., about six people deliberately crashed a sport-utility vehicle into the gas station minimart, went inside, and stole the ATM.

A cryptocurrency ATM was left behind, but the regular cash ATM was stolen. The ATM had about $75,000 inside, the owner of the gas station said.

The burglars then got into a second vehicle and fled in an unknown direction, police said. The SUV the burglars used to crash into the minimart, a black Jeep, was left behind at the scene.

The owner said the gas station did not have working cameras to capture surveillance video.

No injuries were reported. Belmont Area detectives were investigating.
