Chicago police officer, already stripped of powers, charged with domestic battery

A Chicago police officer is in custody after being charged with allegedly beating and strangling his girlfriend last week.

CPD says Joseph Vecchio, 31, turned himself in on Friday and was charged with aggravated domestic battery.

The incident happened on Tuesday. Court documents said Vecchio allegedly punched the victim multiple times in the face and then strangled the victim with both hands before kneeing her in the face.  

The victim suffered multiple injuries, including lacerations and bruises.

Documents further alleged that he made the victim clean up bloody sheets as he stood by — even threatening to kill her after placing a firearm on a counter. 

A judge granted an order of protection for the victim against Vecchio. He was denied release during his hearing on Saturday.

There have been two prior domestic violence-related incidents, but no charges were filed, according to court documents.

CPD says Vecchio has been relieved of his police powers since last October. According to the Office of the Inspector General, he was investigated for a string of civil rights violations, including improper searches and conduct unbecoming of an officer.

He is due back in court on Friday, Aug. 28.
