Citizens Utility Board Holding Customer Service Horror Story Contest

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Have a customer service horror story that involves dealing with a utility company? The Citizens Utility Board wants to hear from you on social media.

WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports CUB's Facebook page is offering a chance at $25 off your next utility bill if you enter their horror story contest.

CUB spokesman Jim Chilsen shared one of the utility watchdog's favorite such stories from the past 30 years.

"There was a mom who complained to us that, in the process of getting new phone service, the phone company technician completely wiped out her thermostat, and left her with no heat," he said.

Chilsen said one person will be picked at random at the end of the week to win the $25 prize.

He said tips for dealing with customer service representatives include recording the conversation, and letting the representative know it.

"It's the law. You have to let them know that you're recording the conversation; but also, it keeps the customer service rep on his or her toes," Chilsen said.

You also should keep your cool, and if you don't get satisfaction, post something about your experience on Twitter or Facebook, but be responsible in what you say.

"Always call the company first if you have a grievance with the company. Always call that customer service line first," Chilsen said. "If you're not happy with the kind of service you get, and if you're really frustrated, don't be afraid to get on social media and air your grievances there also. Again, be responsible, be calm, be cool."

He said customers should never give a utility company a reason not to serve you by losing your cool.
