Chicago Weather: Air Quality Alert for wildfire smoke

An Air Quality Alert is in effect as wildfire smoke from Canada has produced the unhealthiest air quality in the Chicago area in decades.

Smoke persists through Thursday night, and air remains muggy, with lows in the mid-70s.

Northeasterly breezes keep choking wildfire smoke in our area through Friday morning, then southwest winds boot out the smoke Friday afternoon. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms may impact Friday evening plans, but it appears that smoke will not.

Saturday appears largely smoke-free with hot, humid conditions and a round of potentially severe late-day storms. But north winds return on Sunday, potentially bringing the return of air quality issues.

Latest seven day forecast:

Friday: Smoke early, storms late. High: 92, Low: 75

Saturday: Severe storm risk. High: 91, Low: 69

Sunday: Smoke possible. High: 83, Low: 68

Monday: Afternoon storms. High: 91, Low: 69

Tuesday: Sunny, breezy. High: 83, Low: 64

Wednesday: Sunny, cooler by the lake. High: 81, Low: 65

Thursday: Mostly sunny. High: 83, Low: 66
