Chicago police shot and wounded a man they said was armed with a gun in the South Side's Washington Park neighborhood Tuesday morning.

At 11:50 a.m., uniformed Chicago police officers attempted an "investigatory stop" on a man they believed had a gun in the 5600 block of South Michigan Avenue.

The man ran from the officers. One officer saw the gun the man was carrying and repeatedly told him to drop it, police said. The man ignored the commands, and an officer shot him, police said.

The man suffered a graze wound to the abdomen and the right arm and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, police said.

The officer who fired the shot was also taken to an area hospital. A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.

The Chicago police Investigative Response Team is investigating, as is the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. The officer will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days during the COPA investigation as per typical protocol, police said.
