2 hurt when car crashes into Hanover Park home on Woodlake Drive
Two people were injured when a car crashed into a house Friday morning in northwest suburban Hanover Park.
Hanover Park police said a car driving on Woodlake Drive veered off the road while going around a curve and crashed into the home, causing significant structural damage.
Police said the driver and a person who lives in the home were both injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.
"I think that's insane. Nothing like this ever happens in this neighborhood," neighbor Ryan Tarasiewcycz said.
Neighbors said it was a miracle that both are alive. The car's impact brought down two walls and left one person trapped inside. Temporary supports were placed in order to keep the home from collapsing completely.
"I'm just glad that everyone was okay," Tarasiewcycz said. "Thank God no one died."
Police said firefighters extracted a woman, the vehicle's driver, from inside the car and rescued another person from underneath the vehicle.
Neighbors said they also helped the man's wife, who was understandably shaken.
"We got her a blanket, some water and a chair to sit down in," said Ryan Tarasiewycz, neighbor.
The car went through the front of the home, and then through the side, coming to a stop just feet from the home next door.
"There was just a whole trace of garbage from our dumpster that they hit, just leading all the way to this house," neighbor Colin Fredericks said.
Based on the damage, neighbors said the car must have been going very fast.
"The speed limit is 20, at most 25. I mean, this is a very lively neighborhood. People are walking all the time," Fredericks said.
An investigation into what caused the car to go barreling into this home is still underway, but police said they believe the driver suffered a medical emergency that caused the car to veer off the road.
