Pepper bullets, tear gas deployed during protest outside Broadview immigration facility

Clashes between protesters and federal agents are continuing Saturday night outside the Broadview ICE processing facility.

Things escalated around 5:30 p.m. when agents made efforts to move vehicles that led to intense moments, including tear gas deployment and multiple people detained by federal agents.

Customs and Border Patrol commander at large Greg Bovino was on the ground in Broadview, where he led federal agents multiple times in opening the gates of the fence outside the ICE processing facility and marching into the crowd of protesters.

Bovino spearheaded aggressive immigration enforcement tactics in Los Angeles before arriving in Chicago earlier this month.

Agents were seen pinning down some protesters, with instances of agents taking people into custody and confiscating different items, continuing into the evening. At least 11 people were detained. DHS said two guns and some sort of explosive device were recovered.

At one point, agents cleared the crowd with pepper bullets and tear gas in one of the most aggressive confrontations in the western suburb.

While protesters moved about into other streets in the area Friday night, the crowd primarily stayed in front of the facility fence on Saturday.

Governor JB Pritzker, reacting to the federal deployment in Broadview, released a statement Saturday that reads in part... "Illinois will always defend Americans' right to peacefully protest and make their voices heard. We denounce any violence against the general public, members of the media, and law enforcement or first responders."
