Bears Sign Punter McGee To Contract

The Chicago Bears and Richmond McGee have agreed to a two-year contract, the team confirmed today.

There's a likelihood, according to Zach Zaidman, that McGee was signed as insurance for the Bears in case current punter Brad Maynard leaves via free agency. McGee would also add some competition to the punting position come training camp, if Maynard returns.

McGee most recently spent parts of the 2010 regular season on the Bears practice squad after spending the 2009 preseason and part of the 2010 offseason with Chicago. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008.

During the 2009 preseason, McGee had four punts for 145 yards (36.3 ypp) landing two inside-the-20. During the 2008 preseason with the Eagles, McGee had three punts for 105 yards (35.0 ypp) with one inside-the-20.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A Chicago Bears press release contributed to this report.
