Bears Sign Former Broncos Linebacker D.J. Williams
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Bears didn't waste much time signing a new linebacker who might take Brian Urlacher's spot in the middle of the defense, but their newest acquisition brings along some baggage.
Williams, 30, missed nine games to suspensions last year -- six due to a violation of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy, and three more for his second arrest for drunk driving.
He has played both inside and outside linebacker, and led the AFC in tackles in 2007, with 141 combined tackles. He had 90 tackles, 5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in his last full season in 2011, but was cut by the Broncos after last year, when his suspensions limited his production to 14 tackles in 7 games.
According to the Tribune, his deal will pay him a base salary of $900,000, but can earn up to $1.75 million if he earns a workout bonus and a number of roster bonuses. The contract should protect the Bears if Williams continues to have problems, as none of his salary is guaranteed.
