Loyola Student Fatally Shot During Attempted Robbery Near Campus

(CBS) -- A Loyola University student was shot and killed during an attempted robbery near campus Friday night. Investigators say he tried to grab the attacker's gun thinking it was fake.

Chicago police say it was just before 8 p.m. Friday when Mutahir Rauf, 23, and his brother were walking in the 1300 block of West Albion in Rogers Park when two masked men approached them, showed a gun and demanded money.

49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore says Rauf, who was from Pakistan, thought the gun was a fake and tried to grab it. That is when the suspect fired, shooting Rauf in the head and chest. His brother was not injured.

Loyola University released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened by this tragic situation, and we ask that you keep this student's family in your thoughts and prayers."

Chicago police say the investigation is ongoing and no suspects are in custody.

Loyola will have a moment of silence University's Lessons and Carols event in Madonna della Strada Chapel Saturday night the university said.
