3 Hurt When Vehicle Crashes Into South Elgin Home

(STMW) -- Three people were hurt early Sunday when a vehicle crashed into a northwest suburban home, making it uninhabitable.

The incident happened about 3 a.m in the 100 block of South Gilbert Street in South Elgin, South Elgin police Sgt. Randy Endean said.

A vehicle heading northbound on Gilbert was speeding when it hit a curb, went airborne then struck the south wall of the ranch-style home by its basement, Endean said.

The driver ran off, leaving a male and female in the vehicle. Those two were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where their conditions were not known Sunday morning.

No one inside the home was hurt, Endean said.

Officers found the male driver several blocks away from the crash and took him to Saint Joseph as well, Endean said. No charges had been filed as of Sunday morning.

The basement wall was completely exposed from the crash, Endean said.

Fire officials said they spent several hours removing the vehicle and boarding up the home. The house was damaged beyond proper living conditions and was estimated to be at least $100,000, according to the fire department.
