Stoneham Police Search For Hit-And-Run Driver Who Hurt 4 Children
STONEHAM (CBS) -- Police are searching for the driver who hit four children Sunday evening in Stoneham and then drove off. The frightening incident was caught on surveillance video around 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Elm Street and MacArthur Road.
According to police, a Subaru Legacy was traveling west on Elm Street and struck four children who were standing with their bikes in front of a home. The car then hit a parked vehicle in the driveway.
James Mckinnon's security cameras caught the entire crash. "I couldn't believe it, I saw the car coming around the corner -- I can't believe I'm watching it and boom there it was," he said. "A car comes flying around the corner and hit my car and hit the kids, sent the kids flying, I grabbed the phone, called the cops and came out here and by that time they had already left."
All four children, who are ages 12 or 13, were treated by emergency services at the scene, police said. Two were taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
McKinnon feared the worst. "They were screaming and crying. I thought two of them were seriously hurt by the way they were thrown, I mean they went up close to 15 feet in the air," he said.
After hitting the kids and the car, the driver backed out of the driveway and drove away while one bike was still stuck under the car.
"That's not a skid mark, that's from the turn of the wheel," he said.
According to one of the victims, 13-year-old Caden Parks-Miller, the crash seemed intentional. "It seems unreal. It seems like something you'd see in a movie," he said. "I heard it speed up and then I heard the tires screech and it just comes at us."
Caden said his abdomen hurt and he had cuts and bruises from the crash. Vincenzo Guarino was also there. He said he woke up sore Monday and had a bump on his head.
The third victim, Julia Cabral said, "It was just a lot of impact all in one. And then, I just remember seeing the headlights and trying to get away."
Her mother added, "I don't know how you can hit a parked car, two bicycles and four children and just drive away. That to me is unfathomable."
Police are looking for what they believe to be a dark-colored Subaru Legacy that likely has front end damage. Anyone with information on the suspect vehicle or driver is encouraged to call the department at 781-438-1215.
