Mass. Opens New State Mental Health Center In Worcester

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts has officially opened a new state mental health center in Worcester, marking the first new psychiatric facility built in the state since the 1950s.

Gov. Deval Patrick, Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray and other officials joined mental health staff members, former patients and families, and advocates Thursday morning to dedicate the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital.

The 320-bed psychiatric facility is designed to allow patients to be active in programs and activities on its campus, and to resemble home environments and neighborhoods. Its programs will also emphasize physical well-being through exercise, movement, nutrition, fresh air and access to sunlight.

The new facility will give mentally ill residents in Southeastern Massachusetts another choice for treatment, following the reduction of beds at Taunton State Hospital under the new state budget.
