Keller @ Large: Who Is Todd Akin?

BOSTON (CBS) - Perhaps by the time you hear this, Republican Congressman Todd Akin of suburban St. Louis will have already dropped out of the US Senate race in Missouri.

If he hasn't yet, just stand by.

Listen to Jon's commentary:

In front of cameras and a microphone, Akin explained his opposition to legal abortion for victims of rape by explaining that when something he calls "legitimate rape" occurs, "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," referring to pregnancy.

That is so offensive on so many levels, it's hard to know where to start, and apparently, his own partisans and money people are all set to give him the bum's rush.

But maybe the worst part about it is the way this true believer made a sham of his own beliefs.

First, you should know that Akin is a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a veteran of the National Guard, and has been a very successful businessman and pol in the St. Louis area.

And he is a very, very conservative guy, anti-tax to the max, and on high-alert about the enemy within we call the federal government.

In the interview where he made his foolish comments, Akin also called the Federal student loan guarantee program a "stage three cancer of socialism."

And in another interview last year he said: "At the heart of liberalism really is a hatred for God and a belief that government should replace God."

Sorry liberals, no room at the inn for you!

Yes, Congressman Akin wants you to be free to buy a gun, and be free of government's boot on your neck.

But he's eager to bring the full weight of the feds up against your current legal right to decide whether or not you want to continue a pregnancy that was violently forced on you?

That doesn't sound very "conservative" to me, it sounds like the nanny state at its worst, and awfully sexist, too.

Akin said there ought to be punishment for the rapist, not for the unborn child. He didn't mention the woman involved. Maybe this fake conservative nanny sees women as children.

Or maybe he doesn't see them much at all.
