Daily Talker: Should Cops Be Fired For Swearing?

Police officers are sworn to protect the public, but at least one local lawmaker says they shouldn't be swearing "at" the public. There's a hearing today at the Massachusetts statehouse on a bill that proposes firing police officers for using foul language.
The Herald quoted one local police chief as saying if a veteran officer with a clean record got fired for dropping an "F" bomb, that would be "over the top." The legislation does not make exemptions for undercover officers who may have to infiltrate gangs.
The bill also proposes that cops who use racial slurs or "negative stereotyping" could also be punished.
One of the lawmakers sponsoring the proposal says the objective is to "reinforce good police practice."
