Cold Temperatures Retreat

There is a small amount of moisture as a warm front edges its way closer to New England. As it spreads moisture northward this morning, surface temperatures as well as the lower layer of the atmosphere are cold enough to support a few flurries and pockets of light freezing drizzle.  Freezing Rain Advisories and Winter Weather Advisories have been issued to cover the potential icy conditions.  Otherwise, midday conditions will include locked-in cloud cover, fog, and mist.   Then, steadier showers will head our way after 4pm due to an approaching cold/occluded front.  Temperatures will be near 40F (north and west) to the upper 40s (Cape/Islands) allowing for this precipitation to fall in the form of rain.  The rain will begin to dwindle down after midnight tonight.  However, clouds, fog, and spotty showers will continue all night long. Overnight lows will remain mild near 40F.

Once the cold/occluded front passes, conditions will improve throughout the day on Tuesday.  A linger shower/cloud cover will make way for brighter skies during the afternoon as drier air works its way into Southern New England.  Breezy west-southwest winds will help catapult our high temperatures near the 50F degree mark!  On Wednesday, a second shot of 'cool' air will drop our high temps back into the lower 40s (which is still above the average high in the middle 30s).  Highs will be in the lower 40s on Wednesday and Thursday. High pressure at the surface and weak rdiging aloft will support bright days. That being said, clouds will increase by Thursday afternoon before a chance of a rain/snow mix enters our picture on Thursday night. Friday morning could start with a wintry mix before switching to all rain for the foreast area. This will need to be monitored.  A front will be bobbing back and forth across the viewing area throughout the day.  Friday will end up in the middle and upper 40s by the afternoon as the front moves just north of the area.

This weekend will be colder in the 30s.  There will be a chance of light snow Saturday evening and Saturday night as a 'Clipper-like' system dives from the northwest.  Sunday will be sunnier, but an upper level trough could spark some afternoon (diurnal) snow showers for Northern New England.  Looks like a great weekend to hit the slopes!

Melissa :)
