Day 31: Obama Makes First Foreign Trip, To Canada

4813474On his thirty-first day in office, President Obama met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa, the destination of his first foreign trip as president.

The president refrained from asking Canada to rethink its plans to withdraw troops from Afghanistan and said changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement can wait.

"I value our strategic partnership with Canada and look forward to working closely with the Prime Minister to address the global economic recession and create jobs, to protect our environment through promoting clean energy technologies, and achieve our shared goals in responding to international security challenges," he said in a statement.

Following the meeting, the president made a surprise visit to an Ottawa market, where he bought maple-leaf shaped cookies for his daughters.
