Star Spangled Stories: How a Maryland man became the nation’s forgotten president

Before George Washington, a Maryland man served as the president of the United States’ first fully ratified government. In 1781, after the Articles of Confederation were approved, John Hanson was elected as president by Congress. He managed national business and foreign affairs. He considered leaving the presidency but was convinced to stay and served his entire term, later becoming the “forgotten president.”
