When the hatred began
I was going to wait to write this until next week when the Yankees are in town but talking about the dislike of the Yankees can be a year round thing here in Baltimore. So I figured I would share when I started to really dislike the Yankees and to be honest im sure a lot of Orioles fans would point to this moment. 1996 American League Championship Series, Game 1 (yea, you know where im going). It's the bottom of the eighth and the Orioles are leading 4-3, Jeter comes up and hits a deep fly ball to right field. Tony Tarasco looks the have the play right at the base of the wall, then all of a sudden some kid reaches over the wall and takes away a possible out and makes it a home run. From every angle its obvious that the kid reached over the wall and interfered with a ball in play. Well needless to say the Orioles lose Game 1 and wind up losing the series 4-1. Not only did that play make me hate the Yankees but it was what happened after the fact. The city of New York made this kid (you should have noticed im not mentioning his name), out to be some kind of hero. He was on numerous talk shows local and national, he was given seats behind home plate later in the postseason, but the one thing that really got to me was when then Mayor Rudy Giuliani gave him the key to the city....really?!?!?! They rewarded a kid for something that most people get kicked out of stadiums for. Ever since then ive looked at the Yankees differently, warranted or not but it's just the way ive felt. Anytime since then whenever the Yankees lose or go through something bad like the steroid problems with A-Rod it always puts a smile on my face. I hate to do this to Baltimore fans but below is the reason I hate the Yankees if my words above weren't enough.
