USA robbed of an Historic Comeback
I start by saying that I am not the biggest soccer fan in the world, but every time the World Cup comes around I get very interested and anytime the United States is involved I watch. So I made it a point to get up this morning and watch todays match between the US and Slovenia, and just like the England match the US fell behind early...
Against Slovenia the US gave up goals in the 13th and 42nd minutes. So going into the half the US saw their chances of advancing to the Round of 16 to be very slim. Then Donovan ignited his team with a huge goal and the coaches son scored in the 82nd minute to salvage the point.
Not more than 2 minutes later the US scored what seemed to be a game winning goal, but for some reason the ref waived it off. The first thought was that the Americans were offsides, after the replays it was clear they weren't. Then maybe the Americans committed a foul, but at second glance it was the American players who were being held, so the question begs what did the ref see? Now I know I should be happy that the US battled back and they showed a lot of heart, but when you have a victory taken away from you, you tend to forget the comeback.
The most disappointing thing about this match is that this could've sparked a huge interest amongst Americans kind of what happened during the Olympics with the hockey team. If the United States does not advance to the Round of 16 which is a possibility there will be a huge backlash because of this missed call. With the win the US would have been at worst tied for first in the group after today, now they need a few breaks, the most plausible is for Algeria to tie England. To put this comeback in perspective if the US would have won it would've been only the second time in their World Cup History to win a match after falling behind 2-0.
No matter how much frustration the US must be feeling right now they need to regroup because if they don't beat Algeria , none of this will matter anyway.
