Training Camp Battle: Kickers

The competition for the Ravens kicking duties is heating up. Billy Cundiff and Shayne Graham are embroiled in a legitimate winner-take-all camp battle. Cundiff is holding his own against the more proven Graham and matching him nearly kick for kick.

Graham is a true joy to watch. He is smooth, consistent in approach, stroke, timing and follow through. No wasted motion or effort. He doesn't think - he kicks. Graham drives the ball with technique and solid compact fundementals over sheer power. May I add that last year in the playoffs he seemed to think to much, rely on to much "punch" and allow emotions to fester. It's not his game and it cost him dearly.

Cundiff might be more naturally powerful into and through the ball. He seems to hit a heavier ball. My take on Cundiff is he thinks to much and plays to conscious. He doesnt seem to get consistent lift on the ball which tells me his strike point is not an automatic lock. Cundiff works hard, is a solid teammate and viable option.

Tune into the kicking game as camp moves on. Thursday night vs. Carolina each kicker should get a half to shine. Let the battle commence.
