HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (WJZ) -- Shocking video obtained by WJZ shows the moment a man rammed a vehicle into the Havre de Grace police station. It happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday.
No one was injured. Police are charging 24-year-old Timothy Joel Jackson Kahl with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault in the first degree, reckless endangerment, and three counts of malicious destruction of property with a value greater than $1000.00.
The rampage started at Kahl's home less than a mile away on Village Drive where officers said he hit several cars. Police responded thereafter they said Kahl called them threatening to kill officers.
"We still don't know why he did what he did," Havre de Grace police Cpl. Ken Terry told WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren.
Neighbor Sheila Keyes told Hellgren Kahl pushed her new car right into her house.
"First, it was a big squealing noise, and then there was a boom!" Keyes said. "No life was lost—just property damage—so I'm grateful."
Neighbor Arthur Bell's car was also damaged.
"He could've ran into one of our homes," Bell told Hellgren. "For the incident to start here and work its way around to the police station that is quite frightening."
The suspect's mother told WJZ he was suffering from mental illness. She declined an interview.
Keyes said her family heard loud noises coming from their shared wall for several days.
Police tell WJZ after Kahl drove through the police station, he got out of the SUV and again threatened officers. They used a taser and captured him alive. He was treated at a hospital following the incident.
"We're grateful that nobody was injured in this. Our officers used great restraint," Cpl. Terry said.
He told Hellgren police had prior contacts with Kahl that "were minor in nature."
The department put up a makeshift door at the police department, and
Cpl. Terry said they may place some sort of physical barrier near the entrance in the future.
Havre de Grace's mayor praised the police response to the incident.
Havre de Grace Mayor William T. Martin statement on Twitter Monday about the incident:
"The events that unfolded late last evening are a testament to the true dedication and professionalism of the men and women who make up the Havre de Grace Police Department and shed light on the constant danger and threats they face every day. We are all very grateful that the subject was apprehended professionally and without any injury to our officers or the public. We must always be cognizant that no community, no matter how great, is immune to such random acts of violence. Thank you Havre de Grace police!"
