The Orioles Win. Theeeeee Orioles Win
The Orioles earned their fourth win of the season by beating the big bad New York Yankees -- but they certainly didn't make it look easy, at least not in the ninth inning when Simon came in to close with a three-run lead. In true O's fashion, they gave up two runs in the ninth but came out with the 5-4 win which improved their record to 4-16.
Before the game, Dave Trembley said he hoped the worst was behind him. And the way the Orioles played last night, except for a couple errors, the manager may have his wish. The O's hit, they played fairly good defense, they hit with runners in scoring position and the work horse Kevin Millwood gave a solid performance.
But... here is my observation. And it's an important one in my opinion. The team was happy BEFORE the start of the game. They looked like they were looser, they were having fun, there was music playing (thanks to Will Ohman) and the lighting (no joke) changed in the clubhouse so the room not only had a new look, but it had a new feel.
I think clubhouse chemistry and the way the guys interact is such an important part of winning (what came first, the chicken or the egg?) but yesterday I saw a WHOLE NEW GROUP. Rhyne Hughes has a constant smile on his face, for one... so even the new, fresh faces are brining positivity to the club. And for Dave Trembley's sake, this is exactly what he needed and wanted.
"It's been difficult," Trembley said before the start of the game. "There were a lot of games we could have won. But it's done. It's over with. I'm at the point where... maybe we got the bad out of the way early."
The way the O's played and looked off the field last night... he may be right.
