Suspect Charged For Shootings At Montgomery Co. Shopping Centers
ASPEN HILL, Md. (WJZ) -- Eulalio Tordil has been formally charged for the two deadly shootings that happened Friday in Montgomery County. Police say carjackings are the motive for Friday's shootings.
Amy Yensi has more.
A man and a woman were killed, and another man was critically injured at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and an Aspen Hill shopping center.
The 62-year-old suspect is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and four separate counts of the use of a handgun in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond.
"It should be noted that our homicide detectives have been working through the night and today on this case," said an official.
A search warrant has been served on Tordil's car. Ballistic analysis shows that it was used in both the shootings on Friday. Further testing will show if it also was used in Thursday's shooting, but officials believe it is.
After the restraining order, Tordil was suspended and his gun was taken. He went out and purchased a new gun; it is not known if it was purchased legally.
"I would not describe him as being remorseful toward the events in Montgomery County," the official said.
Tordil had already been charged with murder for the fatal shooting of his estranged wife Thursday at a Prince George's County high school. For more on Gladys Tordil, including information on a GoFundMe page for her children, click here.
Tordil was arrested in another shopping center, right across the street from the one where Friday's second shooting took place.
Police say plainclothes officers who were in the area investigating the shooting spotted Tordil's car in the parking lot, and then watched him walk out of a Dunkin' Donuts and toward that vehicle.
"We certainly did not want to have any other bloodshed. Plainclothes officers waited until it was safe," said Chief Thomas Manger.
They took him into custody without incident. His weapon was in the car.
Police say Tordil was in and out of several of the businesses in the strip mall throughout the afternoon, and witnesses say he ate lunch in a Boston Market.
The restaurant is the same one where the D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad was known to have eaten one day during the height of that crisis in 2002. Police say that is pure coincidence.
The Montgomery County Police Department first responded Friday to the Westfield Montgomery Mall for a report of shooting around 11 a.m.
They say there was a confrontation in the Macy's parking lot. One person was shot. Two others then came over to help and were also shot. An official said that Tordil was trying to steal the woman's car when the two men came to her rescue. One was identified as 45-year-old Malcom Winffel.
MALCOM WINFFEL:
Police say Winffel, the other male victim and the woman were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Winffel later died from his injuries. The other man, who has not been identified, is listed in critical condition. The woman suffered non-life threatening injuries. The official called those two men heroes.
A short time later, police were called to the scene of another shooting in Aspen Hill. Police say a woman was shot and killed in her car near the Giant grocery store in the 13700 block of Connecticut Avenue. That woman was identified as 65-year-old Claudina Molina.
CLAUDINA MOLINA:

Police are not sure if Tordil has a personal connection to any of the people who were shot Friday. It is currently believed that they were chosen at random. An official believes that the motive for both those shootings may be carjackings. Neither carjacking was successful. Police say he knew the description of his car had been broadcast and so he was trying to get a different car, shooting the cars' drivers and anyone who attempted to intervene.
The woman who was shot and killed at High Point High School in Beltsville on Thursday was Tordil's estranged wife.
Montgomery County Police say they were attempting to track Tordil's movements since Thursday's shootings, but were unable to do so.
"It's tragic that we were not able to intervene before additional victims being shot," said Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski.
Tordil's daughter was brought to Montgomery County Police Headquarters in Gaithersburg for questioning.
His car and two of the vehicles belonging to victims of Friday's shootings were also brought to the station.
There will be a hearing Monday afternoon at 1.
