Snow Causes Slippery Roads, Slows Traffic In Baltimore County

PARKVILLE, Md.  (WJZ) -- A blast of winter caused traffic nightmares. Snow squalls in Baltimore County sent cars sliding across the road right in the middle of rush hour Tuesday night.

Meghan McCorkell has the latest on road conditions.

The State Highway Administration has the situation under control now but a quick burst of snow at just the wrong time had many drivers sitting in traffic for hours.

From Sky Eye Chopper 13, you can see cars off the side of York Road in Cockeysville. A semi-truck was stuck halfway up a hill.

"You can see that there's any number of cars that are stranded in here due to the icy conditions," said Captain Mike Perry.

On Joppa Road in Parkville, slippery roads caused collisions.

"We're in for a bad winter if this little brushing is all we get and we get stuck in horrible traffic," said Becky Quade.

Salt trucks tried to keep up with the isolated storms that hit at a tough time---rush hour!

"We had trucks out. We were just battling the same traffic as everybody else," said Dave Buck, State Highway Administration.

As temperatures dipped, black ice formed all over the area.

With snow coming down in spurts, it was difficult for road crews to predict where the worst of it would fall.

"In some places, it hit real heavy, real quick. In other places, they got absolutely nothing," Buck said.

The snow squall caused brake lights as far as the eye could see along York Road well after rush hour.

Drivers WJZ spoke with spent hours on the road.

"Amazed and shocked," said one.

"It was pretty much an hour to go what would normally be about two minutes down the road," said another.

Many are worried this is just the start of the snow.

The State Highway Administration will have salt trucks out throughout the night to monitor road conditions.
