Smithsonian Magazine Awards Second 'Ingenuity Awards'

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Singer St. Vincent and multimedia artist Doug Aitken are being honored with American Ingenuity Awards at the Smithsonian, along with eight others.

Smithsonian magazine is awarding the prize Tuesday to honor innovators in the arts, science, technology and culture. The magazine polled Smithsonian Institution directors, curators and staffers to find innovators "revolutionizing their fields with recent, high-impact achievements," editor-in-chief Michael Caruso said in a statement.

"While their work is different in objective, each winner is embracing the Smithsonian's mission to increase knowledge and shape the world of tomorrow," Caruso said. "We are delighted to showcase their work across all platforms."

Annie Clark, whose stage name is St. Vincent, is being honored in the performing arts for her solo albums and her more recent collaboration with David Byrne.

Aitken is being honored for his new installation "Mirror" at the Seattle Art Museum. The piece changes to reflect the city's weather, traffic and other activity.

Other honorees include Dave Eggers and Mimi Lok of the nonprofit group Voice of Witness, which uses oral history to bring stories of human rights injustices into high schools.

The magazine is also honoring Saumil Bandyopadhyay, Caroline Hoxby of Stanford University, John Rogers of University of Illinois, Michael Skinner of Washington State University, Adam Steltzner of NASA and Caroline Winterer of Stanford University.
