Senator Working On Transportation Revenue Package

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A state senator says a proposal to shore up Maryland's transportation funding will include increases in the gas tax and vehicle registration fees, as well as a constitutional amendment to protect transportation money.

Senate Majority Leader Rob Garagiola, D-Montgomery, said Tuesday he is still working on the details about how much to increase the gas tax and registration fees. He says his proposal will also include a constitutional amendment that would go before voters in November 2012 to prohibit the state from raiding transportation funds to make up for budget shortfalls.

Garagiola says Maryland needs between $400 million and $600 million in new revenues to address more than $40 billion in transportation backlogs.
