Senator Introduces Transportation Revenue Package

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A state senator's proposal to raise badly needed revenue for transportation includes a 10-cent increase in the gas tax.

Sen. Rob Garagiola, D-Montgomery, announced the details of the package he is introducing on Monday.

It also would begin a 1-cent inflation index beginning in 2013.

In addition, the measure calls for increasing vehicle registration fees by 50 percent.

A key provision includes a constitutional amendment that would prohibit future raids of the state's transportation trust fund to fill other budget holes. Voters would have to approve the constitutional amendment on the November 2012 ballot.

Garagiola says the transportation trust fund needs an infusion of hundreds of millions of new revenue.
